Introduction: Casey Scheidegger, the Vice Principal of Carmangay Outreach School, was kind enough to offer her insight into this topic. The following information is based off of our conversation.
Could you briefly describe Carmangay Outreach in terms of the the programs that are offered through your school, ADLC, and the students they serve?
Carmangay Outreach is a unique school. We serve Low German Mennonite families based in Nobleford, Barons, Carmangay, and surrounding areas. We run a regular junior high program for grades 7-9, and our high school is mostly outreach courses run through ADLC. Students mostly work from print based materials, although we do have some students working on online courses. Many of our high school students are employed, so our outreach setting allows them to help support their families and earn a high school diploma. Our high school retention rate is increasing and we hope to get to a point where we can offer high school classes, like science 10 or 14, ELA 10-1 or 10-2, etc. in a classroom setting. One of the benefits of our school is that we offer hour long physical education classes for our high school students. This takes place in our gymnasium with a teacher, but we also offer a print based PE program if students are not able to attend on a regular basis to earn the credits for our PE program. We are adaptable and strive to meet the needs and goals of any student that enters our building.
Is there anything you would like students and parents to know about Carmangay Outreach School and Alternative Education?
In our world, students come first. We work with an LGM population and our mission is to aid students in becoming increasingly respectful, responsible, contributing, and successful Canadian citizens. We follow the FISH philosophy to help achieve our mission. This philosophy has four pillars: be there, choose your attitude, play, and make their day. Character education is important to us and we do our best to model the FISH philosophy in everything that we do. Our school also offers LGM singing, German class, and Bible class to students to strengthen the LGM culture and faith.
Is there anything you would like teachers to know about Carmangay Outreach School and Alternative Education?
We take pride in our school and have a high expectation for ourselves and students. We constantly strive to be better than we were yesterday. Building strong relationships with students is key. Our children come first and we do everything we can to help students meet their goals. Our outreach program has a full time teacher that works with students to plan and achieve goals for success.
