Introduction: Ian Lowe, the Principal of Victoria Park, was kind enough to speak with me in regards to the following questions about Victoria Park. The following information is based off our conversation.
How are students admitted to Victoria Park?
Students are admitted through a 45 minute intake process meant to help identify the needs and goals of the student as well as help communicate information about Victoria Park to the student. If attending high school at another Lethbridge School District #51 school, students in grades 10-12 can be referred to Victoria Park by one of their school administrators or counselors. Victoria Park High School has a single alternative Grade 9 class, but students are referred to this program through the District Placement Committee. This intake process has been noted to help alleviate concerns of parents and students as both parties can gain valuable insight into the school community and return home to think about the decision.
What would you like parents and students to know about Victoria Park?
What would you like teachers to know about Victoria Park?
Word is getting out that for teachers Victoria Park is a great place to build relationships with students and make a difference.
In sum:
Victoria Park is a flexible alternative school option that meets the needs of all students.
*Resources consulted: I would like to thank Ian Lowe for speaking with me and offering his insights into the programs offered at Victoria Park High School.

What would you like parents and students to know about Victoria Park?
- There is a high ratio of staff to students. Many students who have not had the opportunity to feel connected to a teacher in the past have had the opportunity to feel connected and welcomed at Victoria Park.
- Victoria Park offers a wide variety of programs that can meet the needs of almost any student, ranging from those who are high achievers, those with anxiety, to those who are struggling academically. Students have the opportunity and flexibility to take certain courses they require at Victoria Park while taking other courses at another high school or taking all their required courses at Victoria Park.
- Victoria Park is a welcoming school. Students with anxiety in a normal school setting feel safe and comfortable to be themselves. Victoria Park is inclusive to all students.
- The stigma of grade level is removed here as students know that each student has their own academic plan. Students can take any course they require at any grade level and the pressure to graduate with their grade level is removed.
- Students who have faced troubles in the past are not held to their past, they are welcomed back and given support to get back on track to achieving their goals. Victoria Park is known to have a wonderful counselling team that helps students connect with school and community resources.
